Green Bean Grove is working to bring Food Is Medicine programs to North Alabama. By partnering with clinics and healthcare providers, we can connect patients with healthy food and nutrition support that improves outcomes and reduces the burden of chronic disease.

Why Support Food Is Medicine:

  • Proven ROI: Studies show every $1 spent on medically tailored food can save $3–$4 in healthcare costs.
  • Better Outcomes: Improves A1c, blood pressure, weight management, and overall nutrition security.
  • Reduced Burden on Healthcare: Lowers ER visits, hospitalizations, and complications from chronic disease.
  • Critical Local Gap: Alabama currently has no dedicated Food is Medicine programs tied to the national Food is Medicine Coalition—you can help fill that gap.

What Your Support Makes Possible:

Funding directly supports:
  • Food: Weekly medically tailored groceries or produce boxes for patients with diabetes, prediabetes, and heart disease.
  • Education: Nutrition lessons, recipe cards, and hands-on support that build long-term skills.
  • Data & Evaluation: Tracking clinical and behavioral outcomes to show measurable impact.

Why This Matters Financially:

Research shows that Food Is Medicine programs:
  • Reduce hospitalizations and ER visits
  • Lower healthcare costs by improving A1C, Blood Pressure, and Weight.
  • Improve adherence to medications and care plans

Return on Investment (ROI):
  • National studies estimate $1 spent on medically tailored food saves $3–$4 in healthcare costs.
  • Even modest A1c reductions (0.5–1 point) can significantly lower the risk of complications and the associated cost of care.
  • For clinics in value-based care arrangements, programs like this directly support quality measures tied to incentive payments (A1c control, BP control, BMI follow-up).

Sample Pilot Budget (20 patients/12 weeks):

  • Food ($3,600): Each patient receives a weekly bag of produce or medically tailored groceries valued at $15. Over 12 weeks, this ensures consistent access to healthy, condition-appropriate foods.
  • Program Lead – Registered Dietitian ($2,500): Covers the time required to coordinate the program, provide nutrition education, develop handouts and recipes, and track outcomes.
  • Materials & Data Tracking ($600): Includes educational materials, patient handouts, simple cooking tools if needed, and systems for collecting and analyzing health and participation data.

This budget fully funds a 3-month pilot for 20 patients, covering both food access and the education needed to support long-term health changes. Your investment ensures that patients not only receive healthier foods but also the skills, confidence, and follow-up to make lasting use of them.

Your investment in a $6,700 pilot cohort has the potential to generate tens of thousands of dollars in avoided healthcare costs — while improving patients’ lives and strengthening your clinic’s performance metrics.
